This is a new development in the field of mental health. While email exchange is never a real substitute for face-to-face sessions, it can be extremely helpful, especially in cases where the patient is shut in, fearful about leaving home, shamed and isolated by a particular problem, or simply needing a "jump-start" toward finding some answers and improving a situation.
